2016's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them took us back to JK Rowling's Wizarding World via 1920s New York, and that was only the beginning.

This year, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will continue to expand on what was going on back when Harry Potter was not even a twinkle in his parents' eyes (in fact, Lily and James haven't even been born yet either). Here's what you need to know.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald trailer

Fantastic Beasts 2's first trailer was released on March 13, teasing Newt Scamander's trip to Paris and giving us a first good look at Jude Law's Dumbledore, among other things.

It was preceded by the 'Wizarding World' teaser below, which gave absolutely nothing away.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald release date

The Crimes of Grindelwald will be released in UK and US cinemas on the 16 November, two years after Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – inspired by JK Rowling's book/fictional textbook of the same name – came out.

November has been the month of choice for many (but not all) of the Wizarding World movies – we reckon it helps them to keep that slightly Christmassy feel.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald cast

Fantastic Beasts 2 will combine the cast of the first film with some new faces. Katherine Waterston and Eddie Redmayne are back as (spoiler alert) future married couple Porpentina 'Tina' Goldstein and Newton 'Newt' Scamander, alongside Alison Sudol as Tina's sister Queenie and Dan Fogler as American No-Maj Jacob Kowalski.

Carmen Ejogo is back as MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America) president Seraphina Picquery, with Kevin Guthrie reprising his role as her subordinate Mr Abernathy.

A return that will be a surprise to some is Ezra Miller as the Obscurial Credence Barebone, and Zoƫ Kravitz will graduate from moving photograph to actual flesh-and-blood character as Leta Lestrange.

After showing up at the end of the previous film, Johnny Depp will (controversially) be back as the titular Gellert Grindelwald, with Jude Law playing his friend-turned-rival, none other than Albus Dumbledore.

Callum Turner is playing Newt's older, more successful brother, auror Theseus Scamander, and Brontis Jodorowsky will take on the part of Nicolas Flamel, a name fans will recall from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Jessica Williams, Claudia Kim, Derek Riddell, William Nadylam and Poppy Corby-Tuech are also on the cast.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them director David Yates is returning for the next instalment, his sixth movie in the Harry Potter franchise.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald plot

We're not sure exactly when Fantastic Beasts 2 is set (other than it isn't directly after the first film) but we do know where. The Crimes of Grindelwald is taking us to gay Paris.

The film will continue the story of the Wizarding World's conflict with Grindelwald. He's already escaped the custody of the comically inept MACUSA, and is hatching a plot to build an army of pure-blood wizards to conquer the muggle world.

His old pal Dumbledore (looking far younger and more dashing than we're used to) goes on the offensive, enlisting his former student Newt to help stop the dark wizard's threat.

A deleted scene from the first film was to have revealed that Credence had survived, and he'll be back again – potentially as part of the Circus Arcanus alongside Kim's enigmatic character.

We don't know how Jacob Kowalski will factor in the film, after his memory of all his adventures with Newt and the gang were wiped at the end of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

As for Dumbledore, fans were annoyed to hear that – despite appearing opposite his unrequited love (or former lover?) Grindelwald – his sexuality will "not explicitly" be addressed in the film.

What comes after Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald?

fantastic-beasts

The Crimes of Grindelwald is the second instalment in the five-part Fantastic Beasts series. The story will span events in the Wizarding World from 1926 to 1945 – a 19-year period that will presumably climax in the duel with Grindelwald in which Dumbledore came into possession of the Elder Wand (and a certain Tom Riddle graduated from Hogwarts).

A tweet from JK Rowling herself has fans theorising that the third, fourth and fifth films will be set in Germany, Spain (or another Spanish-speaking country) and Italy respectively.

Latter films will presumably touch on the early years of Voldemort as well as following the ongoing conflict with Grindelwald.
